Running Uphill: Quick Video Tutorial

As much as I love running in West Virginia, business often takes me far from home. I don’t mind, however, when the destination is Boulder. Colorado. I was there for several days in early August to conduct running drills and work with the Newton Running team on various projects. Whenever time permitted and the meetings were over, I headed straight for the trails. Here’s a video on uphill running that my friend, Pete Larson, who is also Mr. Runblogger (a must-read blog for anyone interested in any and all aspects of footwear science, gait, and shoes), filmed of me and Two Rivers Treads employee Brad Dodson going up the rocky trail on Flagstaff Mountain. Brad is a 4:07 miler, physical therapy student, and formerly injured runner. I say “formerly.” Enjoy the short video, and I hope it helps you better tackle the hills in our own backyard near and around Shepherdstown.

It’s a Bird, It’s A Plane, No…It’s Brandon Going All Out at the Finish in a High School Track Meet

Brandon Doughty, who works part-time at Two Rivers Treads, is also an accomplished high school runner, wining the mile and cross-country states his junior year. Here’s his pr’s: 400 meters-50.4; 800 meters-1:54.03; 1600 meters-4:12; 3200 meters-9:12. His top time for the 5K is a sizzling 15:23. In this photo, Brandon is simply doing what he knows best, and that is giving his all near the finish. He didn’t win the 800 meters race, but we’ll give him a 10 for his airborne form, giving new meaning to the term, “taking a dive.”

Local Runners Take Part in Our New Video for Newton Running Shoes

Local runners mill in front of the store as the filming is about to get underway.

Even though it was hot, with one of the nation’s worst heat waves clamping down on folks, local runners came out in response to my email invitation to film a community-oriented piece for Newton Running Shoes. Probably over a hundred runners showed up in front of Two Rivers Treads on late Sunday afternoon (July 24.) I also would like to thank The Journal for helping to get the word out. While the video focused on Newton’s brand of running shoes, runners were able to wear whatever they happened to have. Our goal was to film a large group of runners and walkers coming up German Street. All ages, abilities, runners and walkers were encouraged.  The commercial was filmed by Thad Reid Productions, and will be shared at Newton’s Retail Conference in two weeks.

We had such a blast that I’d to share with everyone several additional photos that were taken during the filming. — Dr. Mark

Natural Running Roundup

Here’s a short, new video that my friend Bill Katovsky over at Zero Drop put together. He’s a fan of westerns. It features Born to Run author Chris McDougall and myself leading local runners through natural running drills. Filmed on location right here in town at Shepherdstown University. No runners were hurt in the making of this video! And stay tuned. Many more natural-running form videos will be appearing here in the coming months. If you want to be part of the filmmaking fun –our casting director has never been known to say “no” to anyone– please email me or come by the store. –Dr. Mark.

Running While Jumping Rope Won’t Let You Overstride!

My six-year-old daughter taught this drill to me and I became immediately aware that this was the perfect practice to create rhythm, balance, posture–and most importantly prevent overstriding. Jumping rope as a drill helps wake up elastic recoil and rhythm. You always land aligned and balanced. When you add a little lean and start moving you start running. –Dr. Mark

Two Rivers Treads is the Flagship Store of the Natural Running Center

The Natural Running Center has just launched! Its web site combines the world’s top running scientists, clinicians, coaches, and a half-dozen stores that completely embrace better running form and less shoe.

Four months in development, the Natural Running Center is led by its three co- founders — myself as executive director, creative and editorial director Bill Katovsky, who is an editor, author, and creator of Zero Drop; and web and shoe reviewer editor Nicholas Pang of www.minimalistrunningshoes.org.

Two Rivers Treads is the flagship store of the Natural Running Center. Big things happen in small places. Such as in Shepherdstown, West Virginia.

About the Natural Running Center. The current natural running movement is the confluence where doctors, other health professionals, coaches, and runners are now joining and discovering the injury-prevention formula. The Natural Running Center (NRC) will provide physicians, healthcare providers, coaches, and runners with the tools to educate and inspire everyone to relearn how to run and improve their health.

Why is this movement occurring now? In most large-scale change involving health issues we have waited for the top-down declarations.  This is where academia announces important discoveries and tries to move the discovery into a physician’s daily practice. This is a slow process and on average it takes 10 years for an important medical discovery to become routine in a clinician’s practice. Instead, the movement toward a healthier and sustainable way to run is occurring in a popular, bottom-up revolution. This is where the people, in this case the runners, are the gathering force. While shoe companies have finally taken serious notice here with a wide variety of new designs and models, it’s the runners themselves who have discovered the positive benefits — changes that are literally happening underfoot.  These runners come from many backgrounds –barefoot, legions of Chi Runners, all those newly adopters of minimalist shoes, devoted fans of Chris McDougall’s bestseller Born to Run, and formerly injured runners who are running pain-free for the first time in ages.

There are important scientific work and writings supporting the principles of proper gait movement patterns and the dysfunction triggered by elevated heel and overly cushioned shoes.  We wish to share this information in an accessible way the average runner can understand. The essential core message of the Natural Running Center is that we want every runner to be able to make an healthy, injury-free transition to better running mechanics.

The regular features and departments of the Natural Running Center include the following: detailed shoe reviews (over 60 models — barefoot style, minimalist, neutral/transition, and walking/casual); footwear education and training tips by coaching and gait experts; articles by NRC’s health, science and medical advisory board members; separate pages for all natural running stores that are partnered with the NRC; and much more. –Dr. Mark
